Taking Care of Your Dentures
If you’ve recently got dentures for the first time, you’ll be keen to take care of them properly. Just as we need to care for our natural teeth and gums, making sure that your dentures are cleaned daily really matters. Making sure that you follow appropriate cleaning routines will extend the life of your dentures and help to avoid the need for early replacement. It’s also an important tool to help you prevent inflamed gums, infections, and even the loss of further teeth.
With that in mind, it’s also important to stress that your gums and remaining natural teeth shouldn’t be forgotten as you clean your dentures! Maintaining your good dental hygiene will help to keep your teeth and gums in great shape, which will help your dentures to fit properly and feel comfortable.

How to Clean Your Dentures
Brush dentures daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush or specialist denture brush to remove plaque and bits of food trapped in the denture, and then rinse dentures under running water. It would also help if you soaked your dentures once a day to remove the more stubborn stains. You can use a denture cleanser tablet in warm water. Do not use hot water, as this can cause damage to the denture, and do not use toothpaste on dentures because it is too abrasive.
The cleaning process is the same for flexible dentures, but as flexible dentures are more prone to bacteria build-up, ensure you clean them extra carefully with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
It’s best not to wear your dentures at night unless your dental specialist has advised you to do so. This will give your jaw and gums a chance to relax. Dentures should not be left to dry out, so if you need to store your dentures for any length of time, such as overnight, it’s important to leave them in water to keep them moist. If the acrylic material that dentures are made from dries out, it could distort or crack, affecting the fit and function of your denture.
You can use specialist denture cleaning bleach to remove stubborn stains and keep your smile extra bright. A simple home whitening method is to soak your dentures for 20-30 minutes in equal parts vinegar and cold water. Then finish with a rinse.
