Common Teething problems

Dentures take some getting used to, so if you’ve just started wearing them and are struggling, you aren’t alone in this! With time, you’ll find they should become comfortable and natural to wear.

In the first few days, you will find that you salivate more than you’re used to. This is because your mouth is aware of your dentures as a foreign object, and will stop as you get used to them. You may also find there is some soreness to start with but, again, this will pass. If it doesn’t, consult our dental technicians. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water for the first 14 days may help with this.

It’s also common to find eating and speaking a little more challenging than you might expect! This is also normal, and is just your mouth getting used to the dentures. Practice makes perfect, so try reading aloud or singing. When it comes to eating, it’s advisable to start with soft foods, cut into small pieces. As you become more comfortable and confident with your dentures, you can progress to the food you normally eat. Practice chewing on both sides of your denture to keep it stable.

New Denture FAQs

Proper denture care matters! It’s important to brush, rinse and soak your dentures daily.

Everyone is different, and the way a person’s mouth responds to dentures can vary. As a rule, most people report finding they get used to their new dentures within roughly 30 days.

As your mouth gets used to your dentures, they move slightly. If they touch the back of your throat when doing so, this can cause you to gag. If you’ve had a tooth extraction and still have swelling, this can also push your dentures into the wrong position, causing the issue. Over time this should stop, but if it doesn’t, it may be that you are particularly sensitive in this area, and your dentures may require adjustment.

There may be some discomfort as your mouth and jaw gets used to the denture. Warm salt water rinses for the first 14 days may help to alleviate this. If soreness persists, please seek advice from your dentist or dental technician.
